Axiom-4 Space Mission
Gp Captain Shukla had gone to the International Space Station as part of the Axiom-4 mission with astronauts from Poland,Hungary, and the United States. This was a privately funded mission to the International Space Station (ISS) organized by Axiom Space in partnership with SpaceX and NASA.This mission marks the first time astronauts from India, Poland and Hungary have participated in a government sponsored human spaceflight to the ISS.The astronauts were carried by SpaceX Falcon9 Block 5 rocket. The rocket lifted-off from the Kennedy Space Centre on June 25, 2025. On June 27,2025 Axiom-4 docked at the International Space Station. The four astronauts spent eighteen days at the ISS.
Gaganyaan Mission and Axiom-4
Gp Captain Shukla is now, the second Indian national to have ever been to space.
Before him, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma flew aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 as part of the Interkosmos program on April 3,1984.
When Rakesh Sharma lifted off to space, he inspired a whole generation of Indians to look towards the final frontier. Gp Captain Shukla was born in late 1984 in the aftermath of that historic flight. With his experience of having conducted a space flight and living at the International Space Station. Now Gp Captain Shukla will encourage and lead India’s future gaganyatris and contribute to India’s space ambitions.
India is working on its manned space mission known as the Gaganyaan Mission. With a launch in 2027, Gaganyaan envisages demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of three members to an orbit of 400km for a three days mission..
Driving Talent to Private Sector Companies
India is presently witnessing the rise of private sector actors who aspire to explore space and beyond.
The young people who watched Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s flight to the ISS may one day join companies like Agnikul Cosmos, Bellatrix Aerospace,Skyroot Aerospace,Pixxel which are involved in developing satellite launch vehicles and propulsion systems. The day is not far when we will see the Vikram rocket from Dhruva Aerospace and Agnibaan rocket of Agnikul Cosmos launching satellites and astronauts for ISRO much like what SpaceX is doing for NASA with its Falcon 9 family of rockets.
Another ambitious project is the Bharatiya Antariksha Station. Its first module is planned to be launched by 2028 with the full station expected to be operational by 2035. Gp Captain Shukla’s experience and learnings from SpaceX and NASA and his stay as the ISS will inform the progress of this endeavour.
