What Led to the Foiled Temple Shooting in Illinois?
We’ve heard of the 19 year old white gunman who planned a mass killing at the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora, Illinoi. What you dont know is what exactly led to this and Who is responsible for the anti-Indian hate that is moving on from online spaces into the real world?
A September 2026 report by the Center for the Study of Organised Hate (CSOH) documented 542,360 hateful posts targeting South Asians on X between January 2025 and June 2026. Monthly volumes rose 240% between January 2024 and June 2026, reaching 43,843 posts. In 2025, researchers also identified 397,522 hateful or dehumanising mentions across 4chan, 8chan and Gab.
The content is revealing. 45% of anti-South Asian posts on X portrayed the community as invaders, job thieves or demographic threats. The slur “Pajeet” appeared in 30% of posts, while dehumanising content invoking uncleanliness rose 171%. Researchers also identified doxxing, harassment videos and AI-generated racist imagery.
But this isn't all organic. Some of the hostility is amplified by organised networks.
Take Task Force 2990, a Telegram network reportedly coordinated by Pakistani-Canadian Sadiq Ali. Leaked chats allegedly showed administrators directing thousands of members to manipulate hashtags, create fake Indian personas and inflame communal divisions.
Such networks can exploit platform algorithms to push hateful content into wider circulation, creating the illusion that extreme views enjoy widespread support. AI-generated imagery and automated accounts can accelerate the process.
Other actors may exploit these existing divisions for geopolitical gain. Reports by DisinfoLab and ORF have described Pakistani propaganda amplified by Turkey-based accounts and Chinese state-media platforms. DFRAC has also identified anti-India hashtag networks involving accounts linked to Bangladesh and overseas connections, including the UAE.
Meanwhile, anti-immigrant rhetoric is increasingly visible in American politics. In September 2026, Republican nominee Bo French portrayed South Asian students at a University of Texas football game as evidence of foreign displacement. DHS messaging, including a racialised advertisement addressing “Mr Singh”, also drew criticism. Vice-President JD Vance's description of imported labour as “indentured servants” added to the immigration debate.
The impact is already visible. Carnegie Endowment research found that one in four Indian Americans had been called a slur since the begining of 2025, while 9% reported physical threats. And the vested interests are finding the same hatred being directed at themselves.

For India, the challenge is to protect its diaspora, expose coordinated propaganda and strengthen resilience against information warfare. For America, it is to prevent racial hostility from becoming normalised.
