Meet KIZILELMA, Turkiye’s Dogfighting Drone

Türkiye’s Baykar initiated the Bayraktar KIZILELMA project in 2021, achieving its maiden flight within a year—an unusually rapid timeline. Since then, five prototypes have been developed, with several key milestones:

1. Air-to-Air Missile Capability

KIZILELMA became the first drone to demonstrate air-to-air combat capability by successfully firing the GÖKDOĞAN beyond-visual-range missile. In a joint operation with Turkish F-16s over Sinop, the drone tracked a high-speed target using ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar and achieved a direct hit, marking a significant step in unmanned air combat.

2. Autonomous Formation Flight

On December 27, 2025, two prototypes conducted a coordinated formation flight using Baykar’s smart fleet autonomy algorithms. The drones executed a Combat Air Patrol mission, demonstrating the feasibility of autonomous, networked air defence operations.

3. Precision Strike Capability

On March 15, 2026, KIZILELMA successfully struck targets using TEBER-82 and LGK-82 guidance kits. These systems convert unguided bombs into precision munitions using INS, GPS, and laser guidance, enhancing accuracy while reducing collateral damage.

4. IRST Integration

On December 31, 2025, KIZILELMA flew with ASELSAN’s KARAT IRST system. In April 2026, it successfully tracked a target at 110 km, demonstrating advanced passive detection capabilities, particularly against low-RCS targets.

Pakistan’s Potential Acquisition of KIZILELMA

Pakistan may eventually induct the KIZILELMA into its arsenal. The country already operates Baykar’s TB2 and AKINCI drones, both of which use similar munitions. This existing ecosystem would make integration relatively straightforward. On the other hand, Indonesia has become the first export customer of the KIZILELMA drone. Baykar signed an agreement with the Indonesian company PT Republikorp. Under the signed agreement, twelve KIZILELMA drones will be delivered to Indonesia starting from 2028. According to media reports, the number could go up to sixty drones.
