Indian Navy gets first Project 17A Himgiri frigate
On July 31, 2025, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. delivered the Himgiri, an Advanced Guided-Missile Frigate to the Indian Navy This is the first of three being built by GRSE under the Indian Navy’s Project 17A which is worth over ₹21,833.36 crore. The project was launched on 14 December 2020.
These 149-metre-long, 6,670-tonne warships are the largest and the most sophisticated Guided-Missile frigates built by GRSE in its 65-year history as a Defence Public Sector Undertaking.
Himgiri is a reincarnation of the erstwhile INS Himgiri, a Leander-class frigate, that was decommissioned on 06 May 2005 after 30 years of glorious service to the nation.
With the delivery of Himgiri, the Indian Navy gets a significant boost to its advanced guided-missile frigates capabilities. The frigate is equipped with BrahMos anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, along with Barak 8 surface to air missiles, which gives it naval strike and defensive capabilities. 76 mm Gun, and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm rapid-fire Close-in Weapon Systems
With high indigenous content, the ship stands as a strong symbol of India’s self-reliance in defence production.
It can carry helicopters like Dhruv and Mh-60r Sea Hawk which are capable of search and rescue and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations. ‘Himgiri’ also features comfortable accommodation for 225 personnel.
The frigate is powered by a combination of diesel engines and gas turbines and is equipped with advanced AESA radar and modern combat systems. It is capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations. The platform offers advanced survivability and improved operational capabilities.
This prestigious warship was accepted on behalf of the Indian Navy by RAdm Ravnish Seth, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command.
