CHAKRAVIEW: THE ALGORITHMIC BATTLEFIELD
The wars in Ukraine, Iran and Venezuela have changed the very dynamics of warfare. Beyond drones, unmanned ground vehicles, space-based systems and digital combat decision support-based systems will usher in the era of “Intelligent Warfare”.
The trinity of artificial intelligence (AI), military autonomy and algorithmic warfare will eventually reconfigure modern-day warfighting and deterrence. Lately, combat workflows are heavily infused with AI and driven by autonomy, but algorithmic precision makes them unfailingly lethal. We have noted significant discourse on this topic in the West, but a structured discussion on this futuristic domain of warfare is lacking here.
The Israel Defense Forces have utilized AI platforms such as Lavender and The Gospel to streamline intelligence processing in recent conflicts in the Middle East. These AI systems constantly assess satellite images, intercepted messages, and real-time video streams to instantly recognize enemy fighters and generate target lists in seconds, removing the necessity for human analysts to sift through vast amounts of data. By greatly minimizing the interval between recognizing a threat and executing action in combat, this immediate target generation illustrates the concept of ‘Algorithmic Accuracy’.
In the Russia-Ukraine war as well, Ukrainian forces rely on AI software like Palantir AIP integrated with autonomous drone networks to gain a decisive edge. The platform instantly merges live camera streams from thousands of small drones with satellite maps onto a single digital interface, highlighting enemy positions in real time. Furthermore, when electronic jamming cuts off GPS signals, AI vision onboard the drones take over to track and lock onto targets autonomously. This showcases military autonomy and digital decision-support, proving how smaller armies can leverage AI-driven technology to hold off larger forces.
These contemporary examples demonstrate that AI, military autonomy, and algorithmic warfare are no longer futuristic concepts, but rather are actively dictating the outcomes of modern battles. From India’s security perspective, understanding these shifting dynamics is vital. As warfare transitions from traditional attrition to rapid, data-driven decisions, building indigenous capability, algorithmic precision, and strategic autonomy is essential to safeguarding our sovereignty.
