CONFRONTING BATTLEFIELD CONCEALMENT CONCERNS

Introduction

Every major war reshapes how future wars are fought. Expose weaknesses that peacetime exercises fail to reveal, challenge long-held concepts embedded in military doctrine, and force organisations to adapt. Further, lessons rarely remain confined to the countries involved. They influence doctrine, force structure, procurement priorities, operational planning, and professional military education for decades.

The legacy of the Napoleonic wars were the works of Clausewitz and Jomini. The pattern is familiar as each conflict has reshaped military thinking long after the fighting had ended. It is now applicable to the current conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon and Iran and this moment in military history may prove to be an inflection point.

Yet no conflict offers a perfect template for the next war. As each conflict is shaped by its own geography, technology, and political context. Identifying and understanding what the battlefield is revealing about the future of warfare is imperative. But while predicting the future may not be easy but examination of long held beliefs is important.

One of the more consequential developments is increasing difficulty of camouflage and concealment of forces. The strategic use of camouflage and concealment has been a fundamental aspect of conflict for centuries, including the legendary Trojan Horse. But persistent observation is now forcing militaries to reconsider concepts that have shaped doctrine, operational planning, and the conduct of war for generations.

Has Concealment Disappeared

One of the enduring principles of warfare has been the advantage conferred by moving without being seen. Whether advancing under the cover of darkness, using terrain to mask an approach, employing camouflage, or conducting deception operations, concealment has long provided forces with the freedom to move on the battlefield. This enabled surprise possible, complicated an adversary’s decision-making, and created opportunities to strike that might not otherwise have existed. That is now beginning to change.

The advent of pervasive surveillance, is creating a transparent battlefield. Ubiquitous drones and other technologies including satellites make it possible to track, in real time, any troop movements by either side, making it all but impossible to hide massing forces and concentrations of armoured vehicles from the enemy. That same surveillance then ensures that forces, once detected, are immediately hit by artillery rounds, missiles, and suicide drones.

General David Petraeus said that there is now a “death zone” extending roughly thirty-five kilometers on either side of portions of Ukraine’s front line. The precise distance varies with terrain, weather, electronic warfare, and local conditions, but more important is what it represents. This drone-dominated battlefield has forced dispersion of their forces within the kill zone where the saturation of tactical strike and reconnaissance drones poses an elevated risk.

Across large portions of the battlefield, persistent observation has compressed the time between detection and engagement to the point that movement itself has become one of the greatest operational risks.

No single technology created this shift. But it has occurred due to the convergence of distributed sensors, reconnaissance platforms, satellite imagery, thermal imaging, digital communications, and AI capable of rapidly identifying and prioritising targets. Together, these are transforming how militaries detect, track, and engage their adversaries while steadily eroding the battlefield’s capacity to conceal movement.

For much of modern warfare, Commanders had time to identify the threat, assess the situation, make decisions, and synchronize combat power. Today, that interval is being compressed into a single sensor-to-shooter sequence measured in minutes and, in some cases, seconds.

This shift is challenging long-held concepts of concealment, manoeuvre, command and control and sustainment that have shaped military operations for generations. The challenge is not that concealment has completely disappeared. It is that the conditions under which it can be achieved are rapidly changing.

The Transparent Battlefield

Every military now faces the same underlying question: How do they preserve freedom of manoeuvre on a battlefield where movement is subject to persistent observation? Persistent observation is changing more than how militaries find and engage targets. It is reshaping the foundations of military planning. For decades, Commanders planned on mobilising forces under favorable conditions, establishing logistics hubs beyond the immediate battlefield, repositioning headquarters when necessary, and exploiting gaps in an adversary’s awareness.

These considerations influenced everything from force design to campaign planning. As persistent observation becomes a permanent feature of the battlefield, many of those long-held ideas deserve scrutiny.

Command and control is another issue. Battlefield leadership has traditionally depended on understanding conditions at the point of contact. Throughout history, Commanders accepted the risks of moving forward because firsthand observation often produced better decisions than reports transmitted from afar. 

As movement becomes increasingly observable, effective command depends lesson physical presence and more on resilient communications, distributed sensing, and mission command. The ability to influence the battlefield without standing on it is now becoming an operational necessity.

The same evolution is reshaping sustainment. Ammunition, fuel, food, water, medical supplies, repair and replacements must still reach the front. The requirements have not changed. What has changed is the ability to move and distribute them without creating a detectable signature. Large supply nodes, predictable routes, and concentrated resupply operations increasingly invite detection. In response, both Russia and Ukraine have dispersed logistics, adopted more distributed approaches to sustainment and resorted to autonomous vehicles. Sustaining combat power while remaining difficult to find.

Defensive operations are evolving for much the same reason. Fighting positions that once offered relative security can now be identified and engaged with remarkable speed. Units are responding by dispersing over wider areas, reducing their signatures, and accepting less physical concentration in exchange for greater survivability.

The debate surrounding tanks reflects the same underlying principle. So far, each prediction of the demise of the tank proved premature because armour doctrine adapted while the operational requirement endured. The question is no longer about the relevance of combined arms formations but the manner in which they will be able to preserve freedom of manouvre, concentrate combat power, and exploit opportunities on a battlefield where movement is observed almost as soon as it begins. Fighting in an increasingly transparent battlefield requires rethinking surprise by imagining new forms of manoeuvre and creating “corridors of opacity”. 

Adapting to Changes

Every improvement in detection has historically produced an equally determined effort to avoid detection. Camouflage evolves. Electronic warfare adapts. Deception and decoys become more convincing. False signatures become more valuable. But advances in in improving detection and disruption has been met by a determination to adapt.

This cycle is not new. Radars reshaped aerial warfare. Precision-guided munitions altered battlefield dispersion. A recent example being the fibre optic drones. By replacing radio links with fibre-optic cables, operators reduced their vulnerability to electronic warfare while restoring capabilities that had become increasingly contested.

Both Ukraine and Russia have adapted to the growing transparency and consequently, growing lethality by going underground, sophisticated tunnels have also been used in Gaza. But their benefits are limited to defensive troops.

Improvements in battlefield awareness generate new methods of concealments, deception, and manoeuvre. The future battlefield will continue to witness this competition between observation, adaptation and deception.

The Next War

Every generation of military planners and professionals inherit a framework shaped by the last war. Their responsibility is determining what is still relevant and what needs to adapt. That responsibility extends beyond adopting new technologies. It requires questioning the concepts, doctrine, and planning frameworks that guide military thinking before the battlefield forces those adaptations upon them.

This remains one of the greatest challenges because the most consequential changes in warfare are rarely obvious while they are unfolding. They emerge gradually, often dismissed as isolated innovations or temporary adaptations before fundamentally reshaping doctrine, force structure and operational planning. But by the time these changes are widely implemented, the battlefield has usually moved on.

The ongoing conflicts have accelerated the adoption of new technologies, but their more enduring significance may be far more fundamental. Persistent observation is one aspect of a broader shift. More importantly, it is forcing militaries to reconsider long-held concepts that have shaped the conduct of warfare for generations.

Every military preparing for future conflict must ask whether its doctrine, training, force design and professional military education reflect the battlefield that is emerging. New capabilities will continue to emerge, and so will the methods developed to counter them. The enduring challenge will be recognising that no assumption, however deeply embedded in doctrine or tradition, is exempt from re-examination.

The decisive advantage will belong not simply to the force with the most advanced sensors, but to the force that adapts more quickly than its adversary.

Conclusion

Modern conflict is evolving at a pace that challenges even the most advanced military forces. The battlefield is no longer defined by clear lines or predictable engagements. Instead, it is dynamic, multi-domain, and persistently observed.

Wars are often remembered for the battles they featured or the technologies they introduced. Today’s highly instrumented battlefield poses its own set of challenges. Today’s battlefield environment contains fibre-optic drones, precision guided munitions, electronic warfare systems, digital networks, satellite-derived information, precision strike, and rapidly developing applications of artificial intelligence. In this environment, the margin for error is minimal, and the ability to respond instinctively under pressure has become a defining factor in operational success.

But the ongoing conflicts influence, however, lies not in their application but in the questions, they force future generations to ask regarding the impact of the technical reality of modern warfare and one of these is the struggle between transparency and opacity.
